Two SU football players arrested Sunday

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP) - Syracuse linebacker Marquis Spruill and tailback Steve Rene have been charged following an altercation with police early Sunday near campus.

Spruill was charged with disorderly conduct and second-degree harassment. Rene was charged with resisting arrest and disorderly conduct. Both appeared to be intoxicated, police said.

Coach Doug Marrone said he was aware of the situation and will handle it in the "appropriate fashion."

The 21-year-old juniors were arrested after Syracuse police responded to a large crowd at 12:25 a.m. According to a police report, Rene was in the middle of the street yelling at people and using profanity, then blocked a car trying to turn and "appeared angry and ready to fight."

Rene fought the officers who tried to handcuff him until another officer with a police dog got him to comply. Spruill tried to intervene on Rene's behalf, grabbing an officer from behind before being taken away by another officer, the report said.

Police said the players were placed in the back of a prisoner van and Spruill kicked the inside of the vehicle's walls, at one point causing the door to swing open and nearly hit an officer in the face.
