SU gets #1 seed in NCAA East Region

By ANDREW DONOVAN/MIKE LEVIN

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (WKTV) - The Syracuse Orange have been placed as the #1 seed in the East Region bracket of the 2012 NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Tournament.

The Orange will play #16 seed UNC Asheville in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on Thursday at 3:10 p.m.

The Orange have a record of 31-2. They finished the regular season with only one loss, to Big East colleague Notre Dame. Their second loss game in the Big East Tournament semifinal round last Friday, losing to Cincinnati.

It has been widely thought that SU would be granted a #1 seed this season, holding one of the best season records of Division I teams this year.

No #16 seed has ever beaten a #1 seed in the NCAA Tournament, so if history holds, the Orange will advance to face the winner of #8 Kansas State and #9 Southern Mississippi on Saturday. If SU wins two games in Pittsburgh, they'd advance to the regionals at TD Garden in Boston, Massachusetts on March 22 and 24.

NEWSChannel 2 and WKTV.com will have complete coverage of Syracuse's Quest For The Title leading up to their first game and throughout the tournament.
