SYRACUSE, N.Y. (WKTV) - The defense did all the scoring and Team Anselmo defeated Team Moore in the annual Spring Football Game, 9-0, on Saturday in front of 3,716 in the Carrier Dome.
Defensive tackle Jay Bromley sacked quarterback Charley Loeb for a safety to open the scoring. Teammate Brandon Sharpe, a defensive end, returned a fumble 17 yards for a touchdown and kicker Ross Krautman converted the extra point to round out the 9-0 triumph.
"We had 13 outstanding days of practice," fourth-year head coach Doug Marrone said. "The way I look at Spring football, you don't put it all in on one day. I look at is as the entire body of work. People are getting better; a lot of the younger players from practice 11-13 made an outstanding push, and we really saw a jump in their ability, and that's exciting."
The squad was divided up into two teams, one led by assistant coach John Anselmo and the other by assistant coach Rob Moore. The scrimmage was live with a running clock for four quarters. The squads punted, but the returns were not live.
Both scores came in the first quarter. Bromley sacked Loeb for a safety in the early going, staking Team Anselmo to a 2-0 advantage. Bromley had a hand on the other score as well, forcing a second-quarter fumble that Sharpe picked up and ran 17 yards for a touchdown.
"It was just a good play call," Bromley said. "I got through the blocker and I was surprised that the quarterback held onto the ball, so I just ran after him and tried to tackle him and the ball just came out. I was watching it roll and just hoped that someone picked it up and then Sharpe was right there for the touchdown.”
Team Anselmo's defensive effort featured a five-tackle performance by linebacker Sikiri Diabete. His five stops included a tackle for loss, a quarterback sack, and fourth-quarter interception he returned twenty yards.
