Superbowl DWI patrols to continue through Monday morning

(WKTV) - If you are traveling to a Superbowl party, and you drink, make sure you have a designated driver. That's the word from the New York State Police. Troopers will be out cracking down all over the state until 5:00 a.m. Monday morning.

According to the National Highway Transportation Administration, more than 150 people die each year across the country in alcohol related crashes on Superbowl Sunday.

That is a big reason why not just extra troopers, but extra deputies from sheriffs departments, and extra officers from local police departments will be on roadways all over Central New York. They want to do whatever they can to try to make sure none of those 150 plus fatalities that are averaged, happen here.

Captain Francis Coots with the State Police Troop D out of Marcy says with all of the fun the Superbowl brings, it does bring its problems. Coots says the amount of drinking on this day is huge.

He said, "they travel to houses, they travel to restaurants and establishments such as that, there's a lot of people on the road and we're quite concerned that people stay safe when they're driving, that they're not drinking and driving. And of course we want them to take a little extra time."

Coots says the party hosts play a big role in keeping people safe. He said, "they always have a responsibility because if they're drinking, whether it's your house, it's you establishment or it's your restaurant, you have a huge amount of responsibility that these people that are drinking aren't driving their vehicles away from that place."

This is just the first State-Wide Anti-DWI crackdown of the year. The next will be St. Patrick's Day week next month. Others include Memorial Day weekend, Halloween and the Christmas to New Year's week.
