UTICA, N.Y. (WKTV) - The nationally-ranked #4/8 Utica College men's hockey team downed nationally-ranked #11 Manhattanville College, 4-1, in front of 3,847 fans Friday night at the Utica Memorial Auditorium. Junior Ridge Garbutt (Toronto, Ontario/Brewster Academy (NH)) led UC with two goals while sophomore Justin Hogan (Val Therese, Ontario/Brooks Bandits (AJHL)) put home the eventual game-winner.
UC moves to 15-3 overall including a 6-2 mark in ECAC Men's West action and returns to the Aud Friday, Feb. 1st to welcome top-ranked Hobart College for a 7 p.m. face-off. The Valiants fall to 11-7-1 and 4-4-1 in league play. Manhattanville returns home Friday, Feb. 1st against Neumann University for a 4:30 p.m. afternoon start.
The Pioneers broke the ice first at 11:24 as Garbutt put home his eighth goal of the season, even-strength, off feeds from senior Evan Chlanda (Islip, NY/Springfield (EJHL)) and sophomore Louie Educate (Chicago, IL/Aberdeen (NAHL)). The Pioneers outshot the Valiants 15-4 in the first period.
The visitors would get on the board at 7:32 in the second period as Jason Bowles converted a power-play score to knot the contest up, 1-1. Utica responded just.9 seconds later, to quickly regain a one score advantage as Hogan tallied his second season goal set-up by juniors Jordan Hobaica (Clinton, NY/Northwood School) and George Lotito (Staten Island, NY/NH Jr. Monarchs (EJHL)) as the squad went into the second intermission with a 2-1 edge.
The final period was quiet for the first ten minutes of action before junior defenseman Mike Slowikowski (Ewing, NJ/N.J. Hitmen (EJHL)) rifled a wrist shot into the back of the net, on the power-play, off a pass from Educate to give UC a 3-1 advantage with 10:31 left on the clock. Utica slipped in an insurance goal, at 16:45, as Garbutt netted his second score of the night off a rebound from Educate.
Junior goalie Nick Therrien (Rochester, NH/NY Apple Core (EJHL)) stopped 22 shots and remains among the nation's leaders with a 14-2 overall record. The Valiants net minder Brian Fleming recorded 46 saves and falls to 8-6-1 on the season.
Utica outshot Manhattanville 50-23 while each squad converted one man-up advantage on the night.
