2008: Volunteers help PGA tournament prepare to tee-off

By WKTV News

VERNON, N.Y. (WKTV) - More than 800 volunteers are taking part in the Turning Stone Resort Championship that starts Thursday.

According to Steve Mahler, Advertising Manager at Turning Stone, Volunteers are involved in nearly every aspect of the operation.  "They are out there giving information to spectators, marshaling and the course with officials," Mahler said.

There are a number of other duties such as cooking, working with media, keeping autograph seekers from players and helping with day care services for pro golf families.

Volunteers we spoke with were excited to gain access to players during early rounds that most fans didn't attend and be a lot closer to the action in many cases.

In addition, they also received gift bags with jackets, polo's, hats and the chance to watch some tournament play this weekend.

The Turning Stone Resort Championship starts Thursday at 7am. Coverage starts on the Golf Channel at noon.
