PHILADELPHIA - The parent club of the Utica Comets had a busy Friday, making three trades while making two picks in the first round of the NHL Draft.
The Vancouver Canucks, who named Willie Desjardins as their new head coach earlier this week, started off the day by trading center Ryan Kesler along with a third round pick in the 2015 Draft to Anaheim, for defenseman Luca Sbisa, forward Nick Bonino, the 24th pick this year, as well as a third rounder.
The Canucks then flipped the third rounder they received from the Ducks to the Eastern Conference Champion Rangers, for forward Derek Dorsett. Vancouver also picked up an extra second round pick this year from Tampa, in exchange for defenseman Jason Garrison, the rights to forward Jeff Costello as well as a seventh round pick in 2015.
The Comets' parent club used their original first round pick, number six overall, to take left winger Jake Virtanen, a 17 year old who just finished his second season with the Calgary Hitmen of the WHL. With the 24th pick they got from Anaheim, Vancouver selected Jared McCann, a center from Sault St Marie of the OHL.
