Lake Effect Snow
January 24-26, 2006

An otherwise mild January with very little snow picked up some steam in the second to last week of the month. An area of cold air, ushered in by a dynamic cold front, moved in late on Tuesday night the 24th. There were a couple reports of thunder throughout New York State as that front blasted through, but none here in the immediate area. Still though, after some widespread snow, accumulating several inches in spots, more localized lake effect snow took over across the North Country early Wednesday morning. That whole area gradually shifted south, affecting more of Central New York. Most areas picked up a good 2-6" of snow. As we moved into Wednesday afternoon and evening, some localized areas, especially across southern Oneida, northern Otsego and Madison Counties picked up some significant amounts of snow. Flurries lingered for much of Thursday before things slowly lifted out on Friday. The following are snow totals as reported by our SkyWatchers and compiled from National Weather Service public information statements.
