November 16-17 Lake Effect Snow Event (Updated Monday 9:10 PM)

weather wktv

The first significant lake effect snow event of the Winter of 2008-2009 kicked off on the afternoon of November 16th as unseasonably cold air traversed Lake Ontario. The flow set up on westerly winds, allowing North Country and Tug Hill locations to take the brunt of the lake effect. Other than a few minor shifts, the band remained in place from about 4 PM Sunday the 16th through 7 AM Monday the 17th. Coupled with snowfall rates of 2-4" per hour, the band dumped copious amounts of snow in spots.

Here are 24 hour radar loops from Sunday the 16th and Monday the 17th (through 7 PM) of the lake effect event, from Weather Underground.

Lake effect events are not that uncommon at this point in the early season, but given the week of 60s leading up to this cold snap, it certainly caught a few folks off-guard!
