By LEXIE O'CONNOR

HERKIMER, N.Y. (WKTV) - A state and federal Disaster Recovery Center opened at the Herkimer Walmart on Friday to assist individuals, households and businesses affected by tropical storms Lee and Irene and the flooding they created.

FEMA officials are set up in Walmart's parking lot ready to provide information and answer questions about storm-related assistance. The first step in getting assistance is for those with damages can register with FEMA.

"They can register, they get a number," said FEMA's Peter Lembessis. "If they have damages, an inspector will come to their houses, they asses the damages and then pretty quick, within 15 days, they can get any assistance that they deserve."

Also at the Disaster Recovery Center are specialists from the Small Business Administration to explain low interest loan packages for individuals, non-profits and businesses.

The center will operate Monday to Saturday from 8 a.m.to 8 p.m.

FEMA officials say the center will be set up in Herkimer as long as there's a need for it.

You can register for assistance by calling the FEMA Helpline at 800-621-3362 or online at www.disasterassistance.gov.

The deadline to register is October 31st.
