Driver from one accident, pulls officer out of way of separate, out of control vehicle

By WKTV News

NEW HARTFORD, N.Y. (WKTV) - Tuesday's mixed precipitation made for some slippery roadways and caused a close call for a New Hartford Police officer and two other drivers involved in an accident on Route 840.

A pick-up truck and a mini Cooper went off the road near the Middle Settlement Road exit.

While the officer was checking on the drivers, another driver, unrelated to the first accident, lost control and spun into the police car - coming just ten feet away from slamming into the officer and two other drivers standing on the shoulder of the road.

The driver of the pick-up truck pulled the officer out of the way.

"You have to adjust your speed to road and weather conditions when you have precipitation, when you have water on the road and ice spots," said Sgt. Robert Philo of the New Hartford Police Department. "The only safe solution is to slow down."

The driver of the mini Cooper and the driver of the van that hit the police car were ticketed for going too fast for the road conditions.
