Experts: cold to warm to cold temps to kill off many adult mosquitoes in the area

ORISKANY, N.Y. (WKTV) - The freezing temperatures will affect more than just crops and flowers. It's expected to kill off many of the bugs that have already been buzzing about this spring, especially those pesky mosquitoes.

Monday night's freeze will only kill the adult mosquitoes, as most of the eggs are expected to make it through. Experts had predicted a bad mosquito season because of the early summer-like temperatures.

"Traditionally the really cold temperatures of the winter, what we call the frost on the ground, the perma-frost, usually keeps the mosquitoes from it, usually kills them off naturally," said Jeff Miller, Cornell Cooperative Extension Educator. "But when you don't get the colder temps, you're going to have a lot more come spring."

Experts say you can expect the mosquitoes to come out again a bit later in the season and make sure you pack the repellent this summer.
