Week Five: Giant Mountain

By Weather WKTV

The High Peaks Region of the Adirondacks is considered one of the best spots to hike not only in the state, but also in the Northeast.  Today's hike takes us up Giant Mountain, the 12th highest peak in New York State.  This is a great starter hike for the region.

Difficulty - challenging

Length - 3.6 miles to summit

Giant Mountain stands alone in the northeastern section of the High Peaks.  It's easy to access, with the trailhead off route 73.  The hike is about 3.5 miles to the summit, but it is steep near the summit.  The views looking south toward the Great Range are breathaking!

This is a popular hike.  Chances are, you'll see plenty of Canadian license plates in the lot.  The driving distance from Utica to this area is about the same as from Montreal.

Directions - Follow route 8 to I87 (the Northway).  Take exit 24 to route 73.  The trailhead is on the right.  There are two access points to the trail.  The second one is the shorter trail.
