The next time you visit Lake George, take a ride up 28N and check out this hike. Vanderwhacker Mountain is a truely unique experience. The panoramic views of the high peaks is the main draw, but that's not all you'll see along the way.
A ranger cabin at the base of the mountain is a reminder of a passed era. Fire tower observers stayed in cabins like this one for the season. Remnents of the old well near the cabin can also be seen.
The fire tower provides excellent views of the high peaks in the Adirondacks. You'll also be able to see Snowy Mountain quite well to the west - look for the distinct 'bumped top'.
On your way back from the hike, be on the lookout for a very special rock on the right side. A massive granite boulder with the appearance of a face is located about a mile before the end of the hike.
Directions - from Utica - Head north on route 8 & continue past Speculator. Head north on 28N. The trail is on the left side immediately after the Boreas River Bridge.
The 2.5 mile road to the trail is rough. A high clearance vehicle is recommended.
