Kane Mountain is a great start for our series of family-friendly hikes. Situated in the Southern Adirondacks and just off of State Highway 10 east of Salisbury, this is one of the easiest accessible fire tower climbs in Central New York. The views of the Mohawk Valley and Southern Adirondack Mountains are excellent.
There are two ways to climb to the top of this mountain. The eastern approach off of Green Lake Road is longer but less steep. Another trail off Schoolhouse road is short but steep. I recommend the longer road - the parking lot is bigger and the trail is in better shape.
It's less than a mile to the top with a short gain in elevation, making this a good hike for kids and starters. The views of the Mohawk Valley & Canada Lake are excellent from the fire tower.
Be sure to check out Nine Corners Lake on 29A as well to make it a day trip - great spot to swim but usually crowded in the summer.
