History and a magnificant view of the Hudson Valley are featured in this week's edition of the Hiking Weatherman. Overlook Mountain, located in the Catskills, is a great beginners hike that incorporates history and nature.
The trail head is located near Woodstock, NY. The trail is on the old road leading to the Mountain House, so it's a gradual climb. Walking distance is about a 4-5 mile round trip from the bottom.
The most unique feature on this hike is the remains of the old Mountain House near the summit. A poster on the building explains the history behind the structure. Basically, this house was part of the old resorts built in the Catskills a century ago. Many of them caught fire and burned down, including the roof of this structure.
From the NYS Thruway- take exit 20 and head on route 212 west. In Woodstock, take a right on Rock City Road. Look for the parking sign on the right hand side, next to a temple.
