Novice Kayakers and canoeists at the DEC campground at Lake Durant sometimes express worry at having to launch next to the dam built in the late 1800’s to create a recreational facility from an old logging river which had seen its better days.
Just 50 feet from the launch site, boaters see the water spilling over the concrete sluice and wonder if they , too will be swept over a 12 foot drop to the Rock River below. ..
Kayakers testing the waters at the lauch got a welcome demonstration of the safety of the site as a mother duck and her ducklings swam toward the dam and fed at its top. The obviously gentle flow passed the webbed feet of the mother duck and ..after a while, those of her somewhat more cautious offspring.
The once-worried kayakers then confidently launched their twin Otter, amused at their former timidity and thankful for the lesson from those far more adept aquanauts..the ducks.
