For Joe and Noelle Arcuri of Utica, June 23 was a day of contrasts. It was the joyous day that their first child - a beautiful boy - was born. It was also the day they received the stunning news that Joe had APL leukemia. The couple had to face the harsh reality that the first days of their son's life would be very different than they had planned.

Joey Jr. was born at 8:16pm and immediately following the birth, Joe Sr. began his first chemotherapy treatment. When Noelle and the baby went home, the proud new father had to remain in the hospital. He endured bone marrow tests, chemotherapy, dozens of blood transfusions and courses of antibiotics to fight off infections. After 37 days, Joe was finally able to go home to Noelle and their son.

Although he is home, his chemotherapy treatments will continue on an outpatient basis and he will be on maintenance medications for two years beyond that.

This unfortunate sequence of events has overshadowed what should have been the happiest of days for this young family. As friends and family of Joe, Noelle and baby Joey, we are holding a benefit to help them through this difficult time. Since Joe is self-employed and his doctors have limited his work schedule, we want to ease the burden of his long-term medical expenses.

The benefit is on Sunday, September 19, 2010 from 1:00pm to 5:00pm at the Roselawn on Main Street in New York Mills. Tickets are $25 each and include entertainment, food and auctions. Purchase a ticket by visiting http://joearcuribenefit.com/buyaticket.html, or emailing Larisarestive@gmail.com, or calling 315-525-2314. Your donation will help give Joe and Noelle one less thing to worry about so they can focus on raising their baby and returning Joe to optimal health.
