The Utica Clubbers, Central New York Roller Derby’s (CNYRD) travel team, traveled to Bethpage, Long Island on September 4th to participate in the “Empire Skate Showdown.” This event was the first ever women’s flat track roller derby tournament in New York State. The tournament consisted of twelve thirty-minute challenge bouts held on two tracks at Skate Safe Arena, from 1:00 to 9:00 PM. Eight teams from around the state competed, including The Wall Street Traitors (Gotham Girls Roller Derby), Albany All Stars, Assault City (Syracuse), Ithaca League of Women Rollers, and the hosts of the tournament, the Long Island Roller Rebels. The Clubbers defeated the Hellions of Troy, 63 to 43, in their first bout of the day. This win advanced the Clubbers to a challenge bout against the Albany All Stars, which they narrowly lost, 53 to 51. The Clubber’s final bout of the day, the competition for third place in the tournament, was against the Long Island Roller Rebels. Long Island defeated the Clubbers 78 to 48, putting CNYRD in fourth place overall. CNYRD, in their first competition as a member of the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association, finished ahead of Ithaca, Hudson Valley, Syracuse, and Troy. Gotham Girls took first place, and the Albany All Stars finished in second place. Anna “Farmer’s Slaughter” Meyerhoff was awarded an MVP trophy for the Clubbers at the end of the tournament.
