Fourth Lake

Bald Mountain

Bald Mountain is a popular one mile Hike. It's a narrow ridge located a few miles northeast of Old Forge hugging route 28. When I went up there I encountered a steady stream of people. Of course it was Labor Day weekend.

The trail starts out as a short walk for the approach. Next is the climb. It's steep in some sections, but brief. The major climbing is done early in this mountain hike. After the climb, the trail follows southwest along the top of the ridge with gentle sloping. Along the way were cliffs to the south. You have the main trail marked with red disks. Several side paths lead in and out to these cliffs. As I got closer to the tower, the ridge became narrower. The trail becomes all rock. It was like walking on top of a duo pitched roof in spots. The tower comes into view precariously on the cliff edge. Toward the south was a panoramic view of the Fulton Chain. The north is obscured by forest.

I was very impressed by this fire tower. It had the round table with the topo map. It shows were you are and everything around you. Over to the east were the central mountains. Blue mountain was in full view. I could see First to Fourth Lake. Inlet was seen on Fourth Lake's eastern Shore. Bear Mountain was nearby. Woodhull Mountain and its fire tower were visible past Little Moose Lake between two mountains. The immediate north, past a second ridge, appeared to have lower country. Stillwater Reservoir and Big Moose are up there somewhere.

I enjoyed this climb. I want to do it again. A fire tower with a topo map is awesome. To get there drive east past Old Forge on route 28. Look for a sign pointing left for Bald Mountain or turn left on Rondaxe Rd. Parking is on the immediate left. You can't miss it. Be careful, though popular, it can be dangerous. There are a lot of open cliffs and slippery areas.

I just got done climbing a giant east of there. It had a better view of the high peaks than Blue Mountain. I will post It later in the week.
