The Arc’s Institute On Aging

Utica, NY – The Arc, Oneida-Lewis Chapter, NYSARC’s Institute on Aging & Developmental Disabilities is hosting a series of training workshops this fall. Staff from agencies located in the greater Utica area serving the aging and/or people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) are invited to attend. Session titles include: Overview of Aging with Developmental Disabilities (Oct 5), Health Care Advocacy (Nov 2), and Aging, the Environment and Sensory Processing (Dec 7). Workshops will be conducted by Dr. Kathleen M. Bishop, a consultant with The Arc and the Oneida County Office for Aging and Continuing Care. Dr. Bishop received her Ph.D. in Aging with Disabilities from Syracuse University. She has over 34 years of experience in the developmental disabilities field and over 20 years as a gerontologist specializing in Aging with Developmental Disabilities. She is currently the Director of the Program on Aging and Developmental Disabilities at the Strong Center of Developmental Disabilities, University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry. She has presented regionally, nationally and internationally on aging and numerous topics related to aging in persons with IDD. Dr. Bishop has particular expertise in environmental modifications for older people with IDD, older women’s health, sensory processing and aging, and practical aspects of care-giving and older persons with IDD. She has also received numerous honors and awards, including the Lutheran Foundation’s prestigious Crystal Award for advocacy for older persons with disabilities and the Seneca Falls Women’s Wall of Fame plaque honoring her advocacy for older women. She has worked with the World Health Organization, assisting with the development of policies for quality of life for older women with disabilities. Dr. Bishop also worked with the U.S. Center for Disease Control to advocate for women with disabilities and health.
The workshops will be held on the first Tuesday of the month, October through December, from 9:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. in The Arc’s Training Center, 245 Genesee Street in Utica. Participants will receive a Certificate of Completion for each session attended. Spring sessions are planned for May and June 2011.
