On Friday, October 1st Central New York Roller Derby announced exciting news about their brand new team and league structure for the 2011 season. Starting in November, CNYRD will establish a third league team. They will be known as “The Rome Wreckers.” Three teams—The Utica Clubbers, The Blue Collar Betties, and The Rome Wreckers—will make up the Central New York Roller Derby League as 'home' teams, all of which will be chosen by draft pick on October 3rd from the league’s current membership. When CNYRD competes against outside leagues for standings, they will compete as the CNY All-Stars, a travel team made up of the best skaters from all three league teams.
CNYRD’s 2011 season will be comprised of both travel team and home team bouts. You can expect a running round-robin season of games between the home teams, which will culminate in a championship bout to name the CNYRD 2011 league champion team. The travel team bouts will feature other leagues' travel teams versus the CNY All-Stars.
This new structure comes as the result of CNYRD’s growth as a league over the past couple of years. Recently, the league has seen a massive influx of novice and experienced skaters joining the league. The league is currently conducting their regular 12-week new skater training program with a class of over 40 skaters who are scheduled to graduate in December. This new structure also comes on the heels of CNYRD’s September 1st announcement that the league has been selected to officially represent the region in WFTDA (Women’s Flat Track Derby Association) sanctioned play.
