Students in Mary Anne Zawada’s second grade had a treat on Friday afternoon when the author of the book they had been reading all week showed up in their classroom at Notre Dame Elementary School in Utica. Each class had to choose an author to study, read some of his/her books, and do projects connected with them.
Dorothy Stacy, author of the Erie Canal Cousins Series came to their classroom to read the last four pages of, Three Weeks in Utica, Book 2 in the Series. She showed them a PowerPoint Presentation about becoming an Author and some information about life on the Erie Canal in 1840.
During the week, students make life-sized figures of the characters in the book and wrote short character descriptions of them. They also learned about the cities in New York State along the Erie Canal.
