The village of Stamford is blessed with a great historical lookout. Stamford sits at the base of Utsayantha Mountain, which I do not know how to prounounce. The name comes from an Indian princess. You can find her grave, on the right, while driving up the mountain.
I brought a friend with me for the first time. He told me that this was the best view he had ever seen. It reminded me of Azure Mountain where you can lookover a rolloing plateau for miles. At the top is an International Derrick Fire Tower surrounded by 6 or 7 communication Antennas. I was surprised to see antennas up there. There are many picnic areas and even an old observatory building near a lookout. At sunset crowds gathered to sit on the deck of the observatory building and watch the sunset. Just below is an incredible view of Stamford.
Looking north and east was Schoharie County. The Schoharie Valley looks like a giant trench cutting through the plateau. The fire tower on Leonard Hill was quite visible with binoculars. Toward the south was the core of the Catskills. I could see Hunter's ski slopes and windham's ski Resort. I could even see Balsam Lake Mountain, Graham Mountain and Double Top.
Stamford is at the intersection of state routes 23 and 10. This is right at the boundries of Delaware and Schoharie Counties. You can either drive or hike up the mountain. The hike looks brutal. The mountain stands around 3200 Ft. which also surprised me.
