Last week my daughter and I had the pleasure of bringing 1st grader, 7 year old, DJ PENREE to his little league game in North Utica. DJ plays on the Yankees team, sponsored by the Utica Police Department, where his father works, Officer Jake Penree.
Getting ready to go to his game, DJ says to us.... "I saved another kids life the other day..... he was chocking on sunflower seeds, so I did th heimlich on him and he was better."
We told him that was great and that was awesome.... As most 1st graders do, we both figured he was exaggerating the story some..
During the game, we were speaking to another mother who stated.... "DJ was quite a hero last week"... Me, in my sometimes oblivious ways replied "oh did he score the winning run"....
Her reply..... "NO... he saved another boys life by giving him the heimlich maneuver...... "
I was speachless..... I was sooooooo proud of DJ.. to think a 1st grader, 7 years old, took it upon himself and did not hesitate in reacting to this scary situation blew my mind.
After the game, while DJ was eating his hot dog and pretzel, I revisited the story with him again and said... "You know DJ, you really were a hero for being so brave and saving that boy from chocking"
DJ's reply....... "YEAH... AND HIS MOM EVEN GAVE ME A LOLLIPOP FOR IT"....
DJ Penree..... My Hero!
