These days there is a lot of debate in the media and in town halls around the country regarding the problem of illegal aliens. Today I’m going to show the positive side of immigration. For the foreign nationals that come here legally and go through the process of becoming United States citizens, the naturalization ceremony is the culmination of years of hard work and provides a way for our government to formally recognize and honor that effort. Civil Air Patrol (CAP), an auxiliary of the U.S. Air Force, has the unique opportunity to be a part of Oneida County’s naturalization ceremonies. Cadets from the Utica Cadet Squadron, based in New Hartford have been serving on the Honor Guard in support of this activity for several years.
On Thursday, March 20th, 63 people from various countries including Bosnia-Herzegovina, Russia, Nigeria, Israel and many others, assembled at the federal court house in Utica to stand and take the Oath of Citizenship. The ceremony was presided over by U.S. District Judge, the Honorable Judge David N. Hurd. For the newly minted citizens this was one of the greatest days in their lives. It is a chance to take advantage of opportunities not available anywhere else and begin a new life for themselves and their families, here in the greatest country in the world.
Our cadets, young people themselves, are proud to be a part of this process.
If you are interested in becoming involved with the Civil Air Patrol then go to www.utica162.org or www.cap.gov to get more information on the cadet program or to volunteer.
