Spring is in the air at the Great Swamp Conservancy outside of Canastota. Bluebirds and tree swallows are checking out the many nest boxes around the nature preserve in this warm weather. Pretty soon they will choose their "real estate" and move in to build their nests and raise their young. Both species usually build more than one nest each summer and raise several broods of young.
There are many nestboxes along the trails at the Great Swamp Conservancy allowing visitors to get a close look at all this action. In addition, a boardwalk allows visitors to walk though a wetland where many other birds and wildlife are found. The Conservancy will be holding their annual Spring Migration and Nature Art Festival May 3 and 4 at their Nature Center at 8375 N. Main St., Canastota.
