Senior Cadets Flag folding

9th Annual Utica Cadet Squadron Banquet

Everyone deserves a pat on the back at least once a year. On April 29th, 2008, the Utica Cadet Squadron held their annual awards banquet. This evening was put together especially for the cadets, which range in age from 12 to 18 years. The awards varied from promotion in rank to certificates for “First Orientation Flights”. The cadets of the squadron performed ceremonial tasks equal to that of the United States Air Force. At the beginning of the ceremonies, the cadets “Posted the Colors” and performed it flawlessly. Next was the ceremony of the “POW/MIA” table. This visual and intense ceremony celebrates those of the military that are still “prisoners of war” or “missing in action”. It is performed at all military ceremonies. Lastly, the senior cadets performed a flag folding ceremony. This ceremony is rich in the history of the American flag. Besides being performed flawlessly, the cadets were praised for such a fabulous job.
The following cadets were promoted: C/CMSgt Ben Moe, C/CMSgt Bethany Roczen, C/SMSgt Daniel Hereth, C/TSgt Geoffery Schmidt, C/SSgt Schuyler Strough, C/SSgt Ryan Renfrew, C/Amn Shane Renfrew, C/Amn Nicholas Rappa, C/Amn David McDonald, and C/Amn Justen Faszekas.
Cadets Tyler Kulesa and Brianna Rice were presented with certificates of first flight. These certificates denote their first step in learning about the different aspects of Civil Air Patrol flying.
Brigadier General Clark Speicher (Retired) presented the “Billy Mitchell Award” to C/2nd Lt Matt Prokosh. This is a milestone achievement in C.A.P. It is awarded when a cadet tests out of the “enlisted ranks” and enters into the rank of an officer. Along with the promotion comes a greater responsibility. Cadet Prokosh has proven himself in the past and we all look forward to his bright future.
Outside of awarding the cadets, the Central NY Group Commander – Major Carl Anthony, awarded “Group Chaplin of the Year” to Major Ed Kopp. In addition, an award of “Squadron Commanders Appreciation” was presented to 2nd Lt Tina Kulesa.
The dinner was held at the Harts Hill Inn, Whitesboro and was delicious. A beautiful cake was supplied by “Sweetie Pies Bakery” Poland, NY and was also enjoyed by all. The guest speaker was SMSgt Paul DuBay, Chief of Security Forces, Northeast Air Defense Sector, Rome, NY. He gave a riveting speech on leadership that the cadets took away lesson after lesson from.
Other guests of honor that attended were: Lt Col Jack Hosp, Lt Col Tom Carello, Air Force Lt Col Elise Hereth, Mr. Joe Kelly, Reverend Upham, Major Gerry Marketos, Capt Earl Holdren and Capt Michael Kieloch.
