Every year the U.S. Coast Guard opens the new boating season with an official base opening ceremony at each of its flotillas. The U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary at Sylvan Beach has done so for many years and the Utica Cadet Squadron has been the official color guard for as many as 6 of those years. This year the following cadets took part in the ceremonies: C/2nd Lt. Matt Prokosh, C/CMSgt Dan Hereth, C/TSgt Geoffery Schmidt, C/SSgt Ryan Renfrew, C/SSgt Schuyler Strough, C/A1C Tyler Kulesa. The ceremony opens with the posting of the colors. The American flag is handed off to the color guard and they in turn hook and fly the flag, followed by the Coast Guard Auxiliary flag and pennants. This year the color guard was escorted by an armed contingent of revolutionary soldiers that carried a replica of the first rendition of the American flag. Once the colors had been posted, a few honored guests said some words. These were followed by a cannon salvo demonstration and lastly by a great spread of food for all to enjoy. The Civil Air Patrol concluded their day with a group photo with Commodore James J. Phillips from the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary.
