The Phantom Dragons team is a busy crew this time of year. In September, they raced in the San Francisco International Dragon Boat Festival, winning bronze medals in their division. This past weekend they returned to steal the show again, winning the Air Cannon Division at this year’s Punkin Chunkin Colorado!
The Phantom Dragons are no stranger to this competition. They’re the perennial favorites, and were back for their 14th year. They’ve entered the City of Aurora event every year except 2011, and have always set the standard by which the other competitors are judged!
Kamikaze (Divine Wind), the team’s compressed-air cannon, uses a 500-gallon propane tank for its pressure vessel, has a 10” diameter aluminum barrel, and features a hydraulic dump hoist that allows launching at a wide range of angles from slightly below horizontal to nearly vertical.
Kamikaze can launch pumpkins to a sufficient height to be of concern to low-flying aircraft. The team's best launch this year went an incredible 2,491 feet, or nearly 1/2 mile!
