The Civil Air Patrol's Central New York Group was given a mission and they carried the mission out with professionalism and honor. The mission was in support of Fort Drum's Centennial Celebration Air Show. The U.S. Army base, located in northern New York, was celebrating 100 years of existence and that celebration concluded with a fantastic air show.
Expecting thousands of show goers the Ft. Drum military police and base Federal police knew they needed assistance. They employed the help of the C.A.P. Central New York Group, which consists of the Utica Cadet Squadron, the Rome City School District Squadron, the Syracuse Cadet Squadron, the Fulton Composite Squadron and the Mohawk Griffass Senior Squadron. In all for the 3-day mission, there were 47 cadets and 10 senior members that assisted in parking vehicles, giving children ID bracelets and patrolling the crowd. There was also a static display of the groups' "maule" aircraft (a glider tow plane) and communication van.
In addition to the duties associated with the air show, cadets staffed a command post, participated in morning "PT" and conducted C.A.P. classes. This event marked the first time in a while that all the squadrons of the group came together. They worked well with each other and received high accolades from the MP’s and Federal police.
