The Arc, Oneida-Lewis Chapter unveiled a new accessible nature trail at the Arc’s Charles B. Wolkon Day Camp on Saturday, June 28. Congressman Michael Arcuri, children from the Arc Saturday Friends program and Arc officials attended. Oneida-Madison BOCES students received hands on experience for a month this summer as they helped construct new trails at the camp. About 30 juniors and seniors from the Environmental Conservation program, under the direction of teacher Keith Joslin, volunteered their time to bring Don Whites design plan to life. Don, who uses a wheelchair, was hired by the Arc for his expertise in universal design, which focuses on complete accessibility for people with disabilities. The Arc is proud to be able to offer campers a path through a forested area that makes the facilities 100% accessible.
The Arc, Oneida-Lewis Chapter Charles B. Wolkon Memorial Day Camp gives individuals an opportunity to spend a week during the summer—away from their usual activities—in a relaxed camp setting. It was established in 1969 to provide a safe haven for children and adults with developmental disabilities to relax and enjoy themselves.
A recreational pavilion with a large deck over looks the fishing pond. Some everyday activities at camp include arts and crafts, ping pong, foosball, billiards, basketball, kickball, volleyball, fishing, nature hikes, karaoke and team building activities.
The camp is staffed by a full time Camp Director, trained counselors, and an LPN to oversee any medical or health issues that may arise.
Camp includes a full sized dining hall with operable kitchen, nurse’s station, wrap around porch and indoor bathrooms. Our game building is a place that many of our campers enjoy being with their friends and playing games or listening to music.
The Arc, Oneida-Lewis Chapter, NYSARC is a non-profit human services agency which provides advocacy and services for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities in Oneida and Lewis counties.
