Community Foundation helps Arc camp

$24,868 Grant from The Community Foundation helps fund facility improvements at Arc Day Camp. Pavilion dedicated in memory of Harris family member.
Representatives from The Community Foundation of Herkimer & Oneida Counties, Inc., The Arc, Oneida-Lewis Chapter, NYSARC, Arc Board and staff and the Harris family were present at a check presentation on Friday, October 3 at the Arc Charles B. Wolkon Day Camp. The Arc was awarded a grant from the Community Foundation in the amount of $24,868 to replace the roof and install new kitchen cabinets at the Day Camp. “The generosity of the Community Foundation allows us to further develop the Charles B. Wolkon camping facility – one of the few in our area for children and adults with disabilities. The enhancement at our camp makes it a truly delightful experience for the campers,” said Angela Z. VanDerhoof, Arc Executive Director.
After the check presentation there was a building dedication to members of the Harris family in memory of Kristin Lucy Harris who passed away in 1993. Kristin is the late daughter of David B. Harris, Arc Board President. The Harris family has played a major role in the development of the Arc Camp over the years.
The Day Camp gives individuals an opportunity to spend a week during the summer—away from their usual activities—in a relaxed camp setting. It was established in 1969 to provide a safe haven for children and adults with developmental disabilities to relax and enjoy themselves. A recreational pavilion with a large deck over looks the fishing pond. Some everyday activities at camp include arts and crafts, ping pong, foosball, billiards, basketball, kickball, volleyball, fishing, nature hikes, karaoke and team building activities. With the help of donors, The Arc has been expanding and improving the camp over the past two years.
The Community Foundation has been a force in improving lives and promoting philanthropy throughout Herkimer and Oneida Counties since 1952 and has made more than 3,800 grants totaling over $26.8 million. Grants are generated by the more than 240 funds that comprise The Foundation’s endowment, established and advanced by area individuals and families.
The Arc is a non-profit human services agency which provides advocacy and services for individuals with developmental disabilities in Oneida and Lewis counties.
