Westmoreland Elementary School has completely eliminated recess for students in grades K-4. They replaced recess with physical education class daily. The children have no choices and no free time during the school day. There are several parents up in arms over this. I (Beth Ritter) wrote a Letter to the Editor that appeared in the 9/29/08 edition of the OD. This initiated another parent (Shawna Simon) to follow suit and write her own letter, published on 10/4/08. Together, we are going to pursue the restoration of the recess program at Westmoreland. We are going to go door to door for signatures on a petition to find an alternative solution to meet NYS mandates. We are asking ANY parents or citizens of the Westmoreland School District to support this issue! I have placed a large sign of protest on my front lawn.
There is a public School Board meeting on 10/14/0/ at 6:30pm. Ms. Simon and myself are encouraging parents to show and show support on this day.
These are small children who now have NO leisure time at school to unwind and also develop independent social skills. They do not use the playgroung and cannot freely interact with their friends. Imagine your workday break was replaced with running laps for 20 minutes???
