Wstmoreland Elementary RECESS Protest Sign

Westmoreland STRIPS Recess From Students

Westmoreland Elementary School has completely eliminated recess for students in grades K-4. They replaced recess with physical education class daily. The children have no choices and no free time during the school day. There are several parents up in arms over this. I (Beth Ritter) wrote a Letter to the Editor that appeared in the 9/29/08 edition of the OD. This initiated another parent (Shawna Simon) to follow suit and write her own letter, published on 10/4/08. Together, we are going to pursue the restoration of the recess program at Westmoreland. We are going to go door to door for signatures on a petition to find an alternative solution to meet NYS mandates. We are asking ANY parents or citizens of the Westmoreland School District to support this issue! I have placed a large sign of protest on my front lawn.

There is a public School Board meeting on 10/14/0/ at 6:30pm. Ms. Simon and myself are encouraging parents to show and show support on this day.

These are small children who now have NO leisure time at school to unwind and also develop independent social skills. They do not use the playgroung and cannot freely interact with their friends. Imagine your workday break was replaced with running laps for 20 minutes???

lunch period is short & leaves very little time to socialize, this time is used to eat, have you ever tried to get a 6 yr old to eat in 20 minutes!!!! visit school and see how much time is left 3 - 4 minutes. Recess is important to our kids

my children can tell you many stories about recess. The fun times and a place where many frienships were made that have lasted into the adult life. By taking this social time away from the students would be a mistake

"Article 31 of the United Natiions Convention on Children's Rights states that every child has the right to leisure time. Taking away recess, whether as a disciplinary measure or abolishing it in the name of work, infringes on that right."

Do you think it's right for the taxpayers to be paying for maintaining a playground that the students don't even use??? Would you like to go to work tomorrow and have YOUR breaks changed to a MANDATORY exercise class? There'd be a strike for sure!!!

You should also do some research on the benefits of recess to young children. Check out the NAEYC website and educate yourself. If it were YOUR children, you might feel different also. Finally, at lunch they are required to remain seated and eat.

Do you really believe that the children are running laps for 20 minutes each day? These children have there whole lunch period to develop and enhance their social skills with their friends.

I believe that education is the best solution and that students should be taught how to stay healthy so they can bring this knowledge home and excersise this with their family

They shold have BOTH recess and PE class. Children K-4 should also be allowed to be children! For all that think no recess is ok, maybe YOUR workday breaks should be changed to mandatory exercise class? Fair right? Plus all the obese adults????

I think we should be worried more about the education our children are getting rather then how much Leisure time they get throughout their day- Obesity is real and the health effects that go with it!!!

I agree in some aspects with the above article; that children should be allowed free time to develop social skills and keep friendships that have already been established. I on the other hand would love the opportunity to have 20 min break to run!
