I'm sure that you are all aware by now that Westmoreland Elementary School has eliminated recess and replaced it with physical education. Information regarding the New York State mandate that inspired this change can be found on the website: www.emsc.nysed.gov/ciai/pe/pub/part135.pdf, Page 6 item (4)(i) and Page 5 item (c)(1)(i)(i).
The actual requirments can be met in more creative ways than just eliminating recess. Classroom time can be set aside to teach children about nutrition and health, morning assembly for kids instructing mild excercise is another way. As long as it is directed by a PE teacher it will count towards the mandate. We believe that if the school put more effort into an alternative, then both PE and recess could be fit into every day. I would like to remind parents and citizens of the upcoming Board meeting, Tuesday Oct. 14th. The meeting begins at 6:30 but we will be congregating earlier to show support. Please join us!

Westmoreland School officials have taken recess away from our children! The children need US to be THEIR voice and protect what is in their best interest! Be there on 10/14/08 at the High School!
