Adult Bald Eagle Coming in for a Landing

A Close Look at an American Icon

The gathering of Bald Eagles continues in the Poland area. On February 18, I counted 6 juveniles and 2 adults.

Juvenile Bald Eagles are sometimes mistaken for Golden Eagles. Unlike Golden Eagles, their legs are bare of feathers and the under edge of their wings shows some white. Bald Eagles don’t get totally white feathers on their heads and tails until they are 5 years old.

The young eagles practice their flying skills by chasing and flying at each other in mock battles, especially when they are feeding. Considering the size of their talons, it’s amazing that no one seems to get hurt.

Late last December I saw what I thought to be a Bald Eagle near Kayuta Lake. After searching on the Internet, I thought I was wrong because the bird I saw had white feathers on the tips of its wings. Please e-mail me at
