A group of Holland Patent Girl Scouts took first place in the FIRST LEGO League Competition, and second in the Sumo Robots competition at the Mohawk Valley Technology Education and Pre-Engineering Showcase at SUNY Institute of Technology. The team, Girls on the LEGO, is made up of Sophia Mostafa, Samantha Stark, and Jennifer Yager. The girls also participated in the Autonomous Robot Challenge.
The girls designed the robot for the FIRST LEGO League Competition with the LEGO Mindstorms NXT kits. The Girl Scouts programmed their robot, named Sonny, to do a variety of tasks. The robots had 2.5 minutes to do as many tasks as possible. In the Sumo Robots competition, the girls’ robot, named Fluffy, competed in a circular arena. The purpose of this competition is for one robot to eliminate the other by either pushing it out of the arena or incapacitating it by tipping, disabling or overturning it within the time limit of 3 minutes. The Autonomous Robot Challenge is where teams try to successfully navigate a maze with their robot.
