Over 500 area educators attended the Dr. Todd Whitaker conference, "What Great Teachers Do Differently," on March 20, 2009 at Harts Hill Inn in Whitesboro. Dr. Whitaker is one of the nation’s leading authorities on motivation, teacher leadership, and principal effectiveness. His motivational style reaches out to teachers and administrators to illustrate specific qualities and practices of great teachers that elevate them above the rest. Some of the principles explained were, great teachers have expectations not rules, and treat every student with respect 10 days out of 10.
“At first glance, Dr. Todd Whitaker's principles may seem simplistic. But when you listen to them you realize that these principles can make or break a day for a student and/or a class. And breaking a day for a student DOES impact student achievement. Educators at all levels benefit from being reminded and motivated to take the high road at all times!,” said, Maria Papa, development specialist for staff and curriculum development. Many teachers and administrators that attended the conference thought it was worthwhile. “The conference has affirmed to me that I can always set expectations for myself, there is always something you can fix. I also hope that it empowers other teachers to take chances to do something they haven’t done before,” said Michelle Morgillo, Morrisville-Eaton 15-year English Teacher.
Dr. Whitaker is a Professor of Educational Leadership at Indiana State University and a former school teacher and administrator. He has written over a dozen educational books.
Educators from Camden, Canastota, Madison, Madison-Oneida BOCES, Morrisville-Eaton, Rome and Stockbridge Valley School Districts attended. The conference was coordinated by the Madison-Oneida BOCES Staff and Curriculum Development division.
