W-town Boys 6th Grade Basketball Go 51-3

2008-09 RECORD OF 51-3!

As you’re reading this article, please keep mind the following facts: The total number of games and practices over the past three years were over 220! Total amount of games reached 134! The journey first started in the fall of 2006 with eleven - nine year olds and finished in the spring of 2009 with eleven – eleven year olds. I personally coached them all three years and they were “simply” the best!
The Whitestown 6th Grade Travel Basketball Team completed their 2008-09 season with one final championship defeating Oneida travel team. It was the teams 7th Championship of the year, along long with two - 2nd place finishes.
The team was lead by 3rd year player Timmy “TJ” Borza who has the knack to make a coach “look real smart”. Timmy was also named the Most Valuable Player for the past 3 years. Timmy, along with Emmett Cavanaugh, Zachery Malich, Nick Casper, and Logan Jakubowicz were team members for all three years. For three years the team compiled an overall record of 113-4 vs. their own age group and a 120-14 overall record. Along the way they won 16 of 18 possible championships and two second place tournament finishes. Players who joined the team the last two years were; Luke Moore, Jonathan Delahunt, TJ Sittig, and Nick Ashton. The final year, two newcomers were added; Lukas Sunderlin and Travis Eberly. In addition, I added an assistant coach the last year and Coach Lane Ashton was a valuable member to the team and to their success.
The 2006-07 year the team finished with a perfect 35-0 record which was reported by MHTS. The following 2007-08 team dropped one game and ended up 27-1 vs. their own age group. In the final 2008-09 year the team compiled a 51-3 record vs. their own age group. The only mistakes they made were an early season lose to a Dick Miller team from Utica (which the Whitestown successfully avenged 3 other times throughout the year), a lost to a Syracuse AAU team in Syracuse in OT, and finally a 14 point lost to a Clifton Park AAU team in the Oneida YMCA tournament.
The biggest win of the year came against the Syracuse YMCA team with a 43-41 OT victory. Trailing by 10 points with 2:13 remaining in the game. Ten consecutive points: Delahunt (2), Moore (2), and two consecutive 3 pointers by Cavanaugh and Malich forced the game into overtime. In overtime, Luke Moore made the go ahead basket with 34 seconds remaining and the Warriors had to play defense one more time! With two seconds to go Syracuse banked in a 20 foot shot which appeared to win the game, but the Syracuse coached yelled for a timeout just before the ball was released from his players hand. The basket was “waved” off and the timeout was given with 1.8 seconds remaining. Syracuse inbounded the ball, shot a 30 footer only to have it hit off the rim, then backboard and fall out of the hoop securing the Borza 1st Annual Championship to the Warriors for their 49th win of the year.
No team at any level can accomplished what this team did over the past 3 years without commitment, dedication, family support, intelligence, maturity, a “will to win” and “heart”. This team had it all! They played as a team and at a level which was far greater than their age.
As their coach for the past three years, and someone who has coached at all levels (Youth, High School and College) for over 20 years, I can say without a doubt, this is the best team I have ever been associated with. My wish for the future is to someday see them all together on the Whitesboro Varsity High School team! If they continue to work and reach their potential they will achieve great things!
Everyone is proud of this team for more reason than the 113-4 record! I also give a big “thank you” to the parents for traveling all around Central NY for their sons games. I also would like to thank the Whitestown Youth Association for giving us the opportunity to compete outside the area and “showcase” this group of find young men. Lastly, I’d like to personally thank each team member for their total dedication whether they were with me for one, two, or three years! It was intense, rewarding and fun! Please remember to keep your “MOTION” going forward and reach your potential!
