I was on Buck hill at 10:30 Thursday night 5/21/09 taking extended exposures of the night sky with my camera on a tripod and pointed at the north star. A woman kindly stopped to ask if I was OK. I replied that I was fine... just taking pictures. I'm not entirely convinced that she believed me, but if you see this... thank you for stopping!
The earth's rotation is what makes the stars look like they are going around in circles. The north star is above the polar axis point, which makes it appear to stand still. The exposure was about 28 and a half minutes. No trick photography... no post-production.
