David Mathis, President of the MVCC Alumni Association, Angela Z. VanDerhoof, Executive Director of The Arc, members of the CollegeWorks alumni and staff, along with MVCC officials, gathered to sign a Memorandum of Understanding at MVCC’s Payne Hall. The Memorandum states that the Alumni Association of MVCC will recognize graduates of The Arc’s CollegeWorks program as MVCC Alumni. It also states that the CollegeWorks alumni will be awarded the same benefits and privileges as alumni of MVCC.
CollegeWorks is a non-degree, non-credit two-year college based vocational program for individuals with developmental and other disabilities to improve the outcomes for students moving from high school to employment. Students enrolled in CollegeWorks develop marketable work skills, learn self-awareness and self-advocacy skills, improve communication and relationship building skills and become motivated workers who understand the responsibilities of employment.
Year one offers an exploratory career assessment involving four, six-week cycles in Hospitality, Industrial/Maintenance, Care Giving or Retail/Office. Year two students select to study in one occupational area of their choice with a curriculum designed to prepare them for employment. Each student participates in internships and job shadowing with local businesses.
