A time honored tradition once again was performed on Tuesday, August 25, a change of command. The squadron of 14 cadets and 5 senior members stood at attention and watched as history unfolded for the Utica Cadet Squadron. Ending his year of command, C/1st Lt Daniel Hereth handed over the reins to the Squadron Commander, Captain Charles Hereth. Cadet Dan Hereth stepped aside and now heads off to college. This fall semester will find Dan Hereth attending classes at SUNY Oswego. His “major” is in chemistry. In addition, Dan is an active member of the NY ANG at the 174th in Syracuse. He did very good work with the cadets and he developed his leadership skills being in charge of the squadron.
Taking over command of the Utica Cadet Squadron NY 162nd is C/2nd Lt Bethany Roczen. Cadet Roczen is a current student at Holland Patent High School. She has been a member at the Utica Cadet Squadron for over 4 years and is now the first female cadet commander in the history of the Utica Cadet Squadron, which goes back well over 20 years. Cadet Roczen was also the first female cadet officer in the squadron’s history. At the NY Wing Civil Air Patrol Encampment at Stratton ANGB in Scotia, Cadet Roczen proved she could command other cadets. Cadet Roczen received Honor Line Staff Officer. In addition, as Flight Commander, her “Echo Flight” won the prestigious “Warrior Flight”.
“The senior members of the Utica Cadet Squadron are looking forward to working with Cadet Roczen and are expecting to have her accomplish more great feats for the squadron” said Squadron Commander Charles Hereth.
The Utica Cadet Squadron is one small part of the Civil Air Patrol, which is the official auxiliary of the US Air Force. You are welcome to see us in action on Tuesday evenings from 6:30-8:30.
