January 14, 2010 (Utica, NY) — In honor of National Mentoring Month (NMM), Gap Inc. has selected Big Brothers Big Sisters as the recipient of a special fundraiser. On Friday, January 22 through Sunday, January 24, Gap and Gap Kids at Sangertown Square in New Hartford will offer 25% off all regular priced merchandise with a $5 in-store donation to Big Brothers Big Sisters.
The local Big Brothers Big Sisters is an affiliate of Big Brothers Big Sisters of America, the premier mentoring organization in the country. Big Brothers Big Sisters matches adult volunteers with children from single-parent homes. The Big Brothers and Big Sisters serve as mentors and role models to school-aged Little Brothers and Little Sisters. The funds raised by the Gap and Gap Kids promotion will be used by Big Brothers Big Sisters to recruit, enroll, and supervise matches made within the program.
The fundraising event coincides with National Mentoring Month (NMM), created by the Harvard School of Public Health and MENTOR, which is celebrating its ninth year. The purpose of the NMM is to focus national attention on the need for mentors, as well as how individuals, businesses and communities can support the work of mentoring through contributions and advocacy. Big Brothers Big Sisters is the ideal organization to help promote this cause.
Big Brothers Big Sisters will also have representatives at the Gap locations in Sangertown Square on Saturday, January 23 from 12 noon to 4 p.m. to answer questions about becoming a mentor. For more information about the event, contact Kathy Hartnett at (315) 724-6907.
