While driving through the Village of Oriskany, it is not uncommon to see political signs this time of year; but not often are they in support of a 20-year-old candidate.
Shaun J. Kaleta, a junior government and politics major at Utica College, is running for village trustee in Oriskany. The election is Tuesday, March 16.
Kaleta credits his family and the community for his early love of politics and desire to serve. “After growing up in the Village of Oriskany, being mentored by my family and so many wonderful village friends, it is my time to give back,” Kaleta said. “I believe it is never too early to serve and help others, and I am absolutely privileged to have the opportunity to do so. Running for village trustee in Oriskany, I believe I can have a positive impact on this community, a place I have always called my home.”
After graduating as salutatorian in 2007 from Oriskany Jr. /Sr. High School, Kaleta has been an active member of the Utica College community. There, the former Utica Observer-Dispatch Teen All-Star studies government and politics while acting as assistant sports director for the college radio station, WPNR 90.7 FM, and also playing a big role on the Utica College men’s tennis team. Kaleta also works as a substitute teacher in the Oriskany school system where he has established a strong rapport with both the faculty and student body.
“Over the years, Shaun Kaleta has instilled trust among many of the residents here in Oriskany,” said local supporter Debra Buckingham. “His youth, energy and enthusiasm are vital as a village trustee. We are fortunate to have a young man of his caliber so interested in bettering our community.”
Voting for village trustee in Oriskany takes place on Tuesday, March 16 from 12 noon to 9 p.m. at the Oriskany Public Library.
