At noon today, Fr. Arthur Hapanowicz blessed Polish Easter baskets filled with food at St. John the Evangelist Church in New Hartford. This is part of a Polish Easter Celebration.
The baskets contained kielbasa and eggs, a butter lamb, salt, horseradish, rye bread, babka and anything else to be blessed. The baskets were decorated with ribbon and flowers, the food covered with a pretty decorated hankie.
In church, people placed their baskets at the foot of the altar and the priest blessed each food by kind, and sprinkled holy water on the baskets. He called all the children present, to come up and also get a blessing.
The blessed food is eaten on Easter Day in Polish households. A beautiful tradition carried on here in America.
