Caring Person of the Year Awarded

June 15, 2010 (Utica, NY) – Elaine Tanza of La Habra, California was named the Caring Person of the Year at Upstate Cerebral Palsy for 2009-2010. She was honored with this distinction at the Upstate Cerebral Palsy Annual Meeting on May 23 at the Radisson Hotel-Utica Centre. Tanza, now in her mid-70’s, was one of the original seven children to receive services when Utica Cerebral Palsy opened its doors in 1950.

Tanza was a teenager when the agency was founded but her parents were quick to get involved with the new organization in town that was committed to ensuring that life would be better for children with cerebral palsy. Tanza’s parents, John and Anna Tanza, were dedicated to the agency and helped establish its presence in the Mohawk Valley. Tanza’s mother was the first president of the Ladies Auxiliary of Utica Cerebral Palsy.

When Tanza was in her early 20’s, her family relocated to the west coast, a decision that was made to find a better climate and environment for someone who had the physical limitations that she faced. Tanza now owns her own home and, while her parents are not here to see all that she has accomplished, they would be proud.

Upstate Cerebral Palsy celebrated its Annual Meeting on May 23, exactly 60 years from its date of incorporation. Staff, individuals, and past and present members of the board of directions gathered together to celebrate the agency’s accomplishments throughout those years. Congratulates to Elaine Tanza, on behalf of the Upstate Cerebral Palsy family.
