Deep in the wilderness of Herkimer County are hidden ruins such as this mine site. I used to imagine a hole going in horizontally into a mountain, but no. The mine area is a cluster of deep pits and trenches filled with water. I read the shafts descend 150 feet. There are ruins of old buildings and mansions everywhere around the site. Old Railroad lines snaking around the area with sections completely obliterated. The forest is retaking the land. Satellite pictures on Google show that the area has been made completely obscure by the forest canopy. There is almost no evidence of it.
I will not reveal it's exact location. The site is on state property, however it's surrounded by private land. There are only a few access points and it's a maze of logging and snowmobile trails. It's also a dangerous area. You don't want to fall in or get lost here. You don't want to tick off the surrounding land owners either. They could seize the routes in. All I can say is that it's north of the Mohawk south of the blue line.
