Throughout the years - I noticed that each place where John F Kennedy appeared at campaign stops in the Mohawk Valley, e.g. Rome Court House, Little Falls, Mohawk NY places, each had a commemorative plaque in place. John Kennedy appeared at the Utica Aud in 1960 for his personal appearance as a candidate for President of the United States.
So, last year, I, at my own expense, had a plaque prepared locally, I took it to the Aud where the courteous manager and employees agreed to bolt it to a wall of the Aud. Besides, I was a big fan of John Kennedy.
In 1968, Hubert Humphrey, Democratic candidate for President, appeared at the Utica Aud. I attended the event but was denied access by the Secret Service. Go figure. I was City Treasurer at the time. Anyway, I requested they speak with Rocco A Solimando who was City Corporation Counsel at the time. While waiting, I turned and noticed a most glamorous Shelley Winters beside me.
This was the time when she as sleek and trim. I was so excited I blurted out, "You're prettier in person than you are on the screen". She liked hearing that and, again, I racked one up for Utica.
Evidently she was an ardent support of SEn Humphrey and followed him on many of his personal appearances. Rocco did come to my aid. Darn It, I wanted to remain outside and speak to the beautiful Shelley Winters.
My next project is to raise funds for the placement of an historical marker at Genesee Street near Clinton Place, the site of the former home of Vice-President of the US, James Schoolcraft Sherman. The building was demolished in the 1940's to make way for the construction of an A and P Super Market Store.
