Senior, Navy Recruit denied to walk at Graduation on Saturday by Herkimer CSD
Carol Zygo, ‘Navy Physical training sub standard to Herkimer PE Curriculum’

Although allowed by the Commissioner of Education and no school policy in place prohibiting the acceptance of alternative PE, Herkimer Central School District Superintendant, Carol Zygo, has denied Bethany Germann’s request to substitute her Naval Physical Training for the last two quarters of Physical Education at the high school. The reason: Mrs. Zygo maintains that that the rigorous naval physical training, required before starting Basic Military Training is substandard to the Gym class offered at Herkimer.
Mrs. Zygo met yesterday with two of Ms. Germann’s military recruiters, her father and Ms. Germann and stated that the school will not substitute the Physical Training and Ms. Germann will not be able to participate in Graduation on Saturday. The Germann’s have requested a meeting with the Board of Education but as of this moment there has been no response. The Germanns will also file an appeal with the Commissioner of Education for a ruling on this matter.
The Germanns first heard of their daughters Gym failure on Monday, June 21st after it was too late for her to make up the classes. No notice was sent from the school other than a 5-week report citing excessive absenteeism; no mention of potential failure was noted. “You would think if your child was in danger of failing, some one would call or notify you before classes were over.” Mrs. Germann said. The Germanns had no other notification from the district that their daughter, who is scheduled to leave for Basic Military Training on September 14th, would be in danger of not walking or graduating.
“We are disappointed that the district would rather hold a child back than see them move on to serve their country, especially in war time,” states, Mrs. Germann, an Air Force veteran herself.

Did you win your case? Did she get to walk at graduation? Did she even graduate or do they have summer school for gym? What happens now?

Sometimes we wonder just what education our school leaders really have! It sure must be Mrs. Zygo never had any children in the military or she would have known what extensive training they go through!!

Navy boot camp PT substandard to high school PE? What a joke. Maybe Mrs. Zygo should take a little trip to Great Lakes and run, drill and push with the recruits there. She'd be in for a rude awakening.

Further more- I'm sure the navy physical training that she is doing is WAY MORE physical activity then what she would be doing in gym class...... all you have to do is show up and you pass the gym class- the kids are definately not over worked in PA

The school doesn't care. Good luck with Zygo- you'll never win with her. It's pathetic that your child is leaving in September to fight for our country and the school is refusing her to graduate with her class and receive her diploma on Saturday!!!

The 5-week report citing excessive absenteeism should have been your 1st clue.
