The New Hartford RoboSpartans MoonBots Team met with the Part Time Scientists, a German Lunar X Prize Team on Saturday, July 31, 2010 via Skype. The New Hartford RoboSpartans are one of 20 global team finalists participating in Phase II of “MoonBots: A Google Lunar X PRIZE LEGO® MINDSTORMS® Challenge”. The new contest challenged small teams to design, program, and construct robots that perform simulated lunar missions similar to those required to win the $30 million Google Lunar X PRIZE, a private race to the Moon. To learn more about the X Prize and actual lunar missions, the RoboSpartans contacted the Part Time Scientists, based in Berlin, Germany. During their half hour meeting, the teams discussed their robots, sensors and obstacles to their missions. The two teams plan on tracking each others progress and will be swapping team shirts. The Part Time Scientists’ slogan “Hell yeah, it’s rocket science!” is now a RoboSpartan favorite.
For Phase II of the MoonBots Challenge, the RoboSpartans, along with 19 other teams, constructed a large Moonscape that will serve as the competition’s ‘playing field.’ Teams are currently programming and practicing with their lunar robots in preparation for a live Skype demonstration to judges after the August 22nd deadline.
In addition to Moonbots, the RoboSpartans are holding a FIRST® LEGO League robotics demonstration through CNY FIRST® at the Utica Children’s Museum on Saturday, August 28, 2010, at 1:00 pm.
